چکیده

The removal of Total and Volatile Suspended Solids (TSS/VSS) was studied in a pilot-scale UASB (Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Bed) reactor treating settled sewage under subtropical conditions (Salta, Argentina). The effect of sludge bed height (hsb) and upflow velocity (Vup) on the removal of TSS and VSS was assessed. TSS and VSS removal efficiencies of up to 95% have been achieved when Vup ≤ 0.43 m/h (HRT ≥ 6 h) and hsb ≥ 0.92 m. Effluent concentration was extremely low (≤ 5 mgTSS/L). TSS and VSS removal efficiencies were inversely proportional to Vup. A safe and efficient operation can be achieved in UASB reactors treating settled sewage with hsb between 1 and 2 m, and Vup around 0.5 m/h. The reactor was operated at 0.85 m/h during periods of up to two days, but no significant sludge wash-out was observed, even after up to 50% of the sludge bed was discharged. Specific Methanogenic Activity (SMA) was not affected by sludge discharges. Excess sludge discharge operations can be performed once a year. TSS/VSS removal efficiency could be a useful criterion to decide the right moment for sludge discharges.

The performance of an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor and a hybrid UASB-filter reactor was investigated and compared for the treatment of domestic wastewater at different operational temperatures (28, 20, 14 and 10°C) and loading rates. For each temperature studied a constant CODt removal was observed as long as the upflow velocity was lower than 0.35 m/h. At these upflow velocit...

Up-flow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket Reactor Effluent and Electrochemical Treatments: An Overview

Anaerobic processes present a high potential in most developing countries for municipal wastewater treatment, and thus is a suitable and economical solution. The anaerobic process can serve as a viable alternative, compared to conventional aerobic processes. Within the spectrum of anaerobic sewage treatment technologies, the upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor offers great promise, e...

Integrated upflow anaerobic sludge blanket and radial-flow aerobic reactors for sewage treatment

Integrated anaerobic/aerobic systems have been considered feasible alternatives concerning technical and economic aspects for treating domestic wastewaters. The main modification in the UASB reactor concerns this association with the RAIB. The UASB effluent was distributed through openings along its side walls to the RAIB, allowing the elimination of collecting channels and feeding devices from...

Effect of recycle-to-influent ratio on activities of nitrifiers and denitrifiers in a combined UASB-activated sludge reactor system.

A laboratory study using a combined upflow anaerobic sludge bed (UASB)-activated sludge (AS) reactor system was undertaken to explore the effect of recycle-to-influent ratio (R(e)=1, 2, and 3) on the activities of nitrifiers and denitrifiers. Suspended-solids pre-settled piggery wastewater was used as the substrate-feed wastewater. At the R(e) of 1-3, the combined reactor system achieved effici...

The effect of sludge recirculation rate on a UASB-digester treating domestic sewage at 15 °C.

The anaerobic treatment of low strength domestic sewage at low temperature is an attractive and important topic at present. The upflow anaerobic sludge bed (UASB)-digester system is one of the anaerobic systems to challenge low temperature and concentrations. The effect of sludge recirculation rate on a UASB-digester system treating domestic sewage at 15 °C was studied in this research. A sludg...
